Has Fake News Media Exploited Gay Olympic Athletes in Pence Controversy?

A controversy about a gay Olympic athlete denouncing U.S. Vice President Mike Pence has gone viral and the coverage has left many searching their souls for the difference between the fake news media and the truth.

It was widely reported that openly gay figure skater Gus Kenworthy has called V.P. Pence a “bad fit” to lead America’s Winter Olympics delegation in South Korea.

“He seems like such a strange choice,” Kenworthy said on The Ellen Show. “To have somebody leading the delegation that’s directly attacked the LGBTQ community, and a Cabinet in general that just sorts of stands against us and has tried to do things to set us back, it just seems like a bad fit.”

The Trump Administration has come become the target of the liberal media and Hollywood because of its handling of so-called gay rights issues. Although Pres. Trump has called for gender neutrality in public policy and reached out to the gay community, the administration’s position on transgender military enlistment has been a hot-button issue for some in LGBTQ circles. The Department of Justice also rescinded a transgender-specific workplace policy in favor of employee neutrality.

Members of the gay community have expressed marginalization due to Pence’s support of a Constitutional amendment that would have defined marriage being between a man and woman only.

“I feel like the Olympics is all about inclusion and people coming together,” Kenworthy reportedly said. “And, it seems like it’s not really doing that.”

Kenworthy joins Adam Rippon as the second openly gay Olympic athlete to level negative remarks at V.P. Pence. Rippon said that he would not go to the White House if invited, according to some reports. However, no offer was actually extended to Rippon.

But reports about Pence and gay Olympians have come under scrutiny and some see this as yet another fabricated controversy by the left-leaning Fake News media.

Is Gay Olympian Controversy Just Fake News?

In response to Kenworthy and Rippon’s remarks that the vice president was not supportive of the LGBTQ community, Pence posted on Twitter, saying:

@Adaripp I want you to know we are FOR YOU. Don’t let fake news distract you. I am proud of you and ALL OF OUR GREAT athletes and my only hope for you and all of #TeamUSA is to bring home the gold. Go get ‘em!

Outlets such as the Huffington Post were quick to capitalize on troll posts denouncing V.P. Pence and fabricated the headline: “‘Hypocrite’ Mike Pence Slammed For Tweet Supporting Gay Olympic Athletes.” Widely ranked among media outlets critiqued as “Fake News,” The Huffington Post goes on to highlight numerous combative reactions without even the semblance of fair, balanced reporting.

Perhaps the leading Fake News resource in the industry, CNN picked up the gay athlete controversy after Kenworthy’s remarks by resurrecting the Rippon’s earlier statements. CNN opens its less than accurate cross-reporting with the liberal USA Today by stating that “US Olympic figure skater Adam Rippon turned down a meeting with Vice President Mike Pence after criticizing him for his stance on gay rights, USA Today reported Wednesday.”

CNN appears to ignore wider, more credible, reporting by outlets such as Newsweek that White House officials have not extended such an invitation. Vice Pres. Pence has denounced the left-leaning media reports as “Fake News.”

The major problem with the Fake News media is that people can be emotionally impacted. At one point, there were unsubstantiated reports that Pence was an advocate of “gay conversion therapy,” an idea that gay people could be re-oriented to heterosexual. Although falsely attributed to Pence, skater Rippon noted this as a reason he doesn’t support the vice president. In the same USA Today article, called “Gay Olympian Adam Rippon blasts selection of Mike Pence to lead U.S. delegation,” Rippon acknowledges that he would, in fact, be open to a meeting.

““If I had the chance to meet him afterwards, after I’m finished competing, there might be a possibility to have an open conversation,” Rippon reportedly told USA Today. “I’m a U.S. athlete representing my country. I will continue to share my story, but I will participate in no form of protest. I’m representing myself and my country on the world stage. I have a lot of respect for this opportunity. What makes America great is that we’re all so different. It’s 2018 and being an openly gay man and an athlete, that is part of the face of America now.”

The Fake News media has been quick to publish select quotes in what appears to be a politically-motivated propaganda attack on the current administration. Despite these misleading “news” stories, Vice Pres. Pence supports all of America’s Olympians.
