Jesse Jackson has been one of the black community’s most prominent and well-known leaders for more than 35 years. A contemporary of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Jackson has been a recognized champion of civil rights, who conducted his own campaigns for the presidency in 1984 and 1988 with his Rainbow Coalition political organization, which he founded to serve the needs of underprivileged and disadvantaged voters.
In 1978, Jackson urged a closer relationship between African-Americans and the Republican Party, saying “Black people need the Republican Party to compete for us so we can have real alternatives.”
Even as a progressive and a liberal, Jackson recognized Donald Trump’s commitments and contributions to black communities in offering employment and creating jobs with his construction projects and hotels, giving credit to Trump many times directly in speeches when both men addressed business and civic leaders.
Like Trump, Jackson is strongly in favor of a nationwide program to rebuild America’s infrastructure, providing work for those affected by long-term unemployment.
