Planned Parenthood: Abortions and Revenue Up, Pre-natal Care Down, Still Funded By Taxpayers

Although Planned Parenthood closed 272 of their clinics over the last seven years, including 27 of them in 2017, the number of abortions they performed has gone up. Unfortunately, many of the clinics that have closed in recent years are ones that do not perform abortions. This is mainly because these types of clinics are not nearly as profitable as the ones where abortions are performed.

According to past numbers, Planned Parenthood had 3.1 million patients in 2006. Their most recent annual report shows that this number has decreased to 2.4 million patients. Despite losing nearly one million patients over the last 10 years, they have reported an increase in revenue. In 2015, even though they had the same number of patients they had this past year, their revenue went from $77.5 million to $98.5 million, which is a 27 percent increase. And although taxpayer funding has dropped by less than 2 percent than last year, it is still a whopping $543.7 million, which by the way is a 61 percent increase from 2006.

The Planned Parenthood website states, “These reports look at the many ways Planned Parenthood is striving to create the healthiest generation ever.” This statement certainly begs the question, “How is it possible they can say they are creating, when all they really care about is killing?”

Over this last year, Planned Parenthood performed 321,384 abortions. From the time it was founded in 1978 through 2017, the abortion giant has ended the lives of approximately 7,453,514 babies. To put this number into perspective, that’s more than the combined populations of Los Angeles and Chicago, the second and third most populous cities in the country.

When comparing the number of abortions they have performed this past year alone, it is a stark contrast of how many adoption referrals they have done. According to their annual report, this number was just 3,889. Their numbers from 2015-2016 showed that they provided over 9,000 prenatal services, but this past year, that number decreased to 7,762.

The most recent annual report clearly shows that Planned Parenthood is making a lot of money performing abortions. It also shows that compared to abortions, they do a very low number of adoption referrals and prenatal services.

Furthermore, the number of cancer screenings they have performed, including pap smears, breast exams, and colposcopies, has declined drastically over the years to 634,000. At one time, they had performed 2 million cancer screenings.

Considering all of this, why does this organization continue to get so much support from the federal government? It’s certainly not because they don’t have any other financial supporters. In fact, according to their website, “Since November 2016 more than 700,000 new donors have stepped up to support Planned Parenthood.”

Melanie Israel, a research associate for the DeVos Center for Religion and Civil Society at The Heritage Foundation, says, “Planned Parenthood’s latest annual report underscores why taxpayers should not be forced to subsidize the abortion giant. Planned Parenthood performs 83 abortions for every one adoption referral.”

She goes on to say, “Fewer and fewer women are turning to Planned Parenthood for care like cancer treatment and prevention services, contraception, and prenatal services. The half a billion dollars currently flowing to Planned Parenthood could instead be directed to the thousands of centers that provide health care for women without entanglement in on-demand abortion.”

Cecile Richards, president of Planned Parenthood Federation of America and Planned Parenthood Action Fund, often touts that many people come to their clinics to receive STD testing, contraception, and cancer screenings. But Catherine Glenn Foster, president and CEO of Americans United for Life, knows that no matter how hard Planned Parenthood tries to convince people that their clinics are necessary for the health and wellbeing of their patients, their focus is, and always will be, abortion.

“Planned Parenthood’s latest annual report demonstrates that the abortion giant’s bottom line is, as always, its bottom line. Critical patient services such as prenatal care are dropping like a rock, while when it comes to abortion, Planned Parenthood continues to push aggressively to corner the market,” says Foster.

In light of all the statistics, why hasn’t Planned Parenthood been defunded? According to Nicole Russell, a journalist and contributor to the Washington Examiner, it’s for one reason and one reason only. “The only reason Congress, which boasts a Republican majority, hasn’t defunded Planned Parenthood is because they lack the grit and fortitude they need to do so.”
