The campaign of Hillary Clinton went on the defense when the candidate was accused of giving special access to donors to her family’s Clinton Foundation while Clinton was Secretary of State. The report by the Associated Press (AP) pointed out that more than half of the people Hillary met with while heading up the department had made donations to the Clintons’ supposedly nonprofit humanitarian group.
But Clinton campaign strategist Joey Benenson and campaign manager Robby Mook both called the accusations “cherry-picking” when questioned by CNN and MSNBC, respectively.
“[Clinton] met with over 17,000 world leaders, countless other government officials, public officials in the United States,” Benenson claimed.
But the AP wasn’t talking about world leaders. It clearly was pointing to private individuals who were not affiliated with governments.
GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump also blasted Clinton’s meetings, calling the practice corrupt and asserting, “It’s a disgrace! This is a threat to the foundation of democracy. This is what happens in Third World countries.”
