The “Unpardonable Sin” in Modern American Politics

Congressman Louie Gohmert (R-TX), a wildly popular Southern Baptist Representative from east Texas, outraged Republicans and Democrats alike in a House Judiciary Committee hearing last week. The hearing was a 12-hour attempted questioning of former FBI investigator Peter Strzok over his handling of the criminal Hillary Clinton email investigation, the fabricated Trump “Russian collusion” investigation, and Strzok’s biased and obscene text messages with his FBI mistress, Lisa Page.

Congressman Gohmert’s unpardonable sin was to ask a question related to Strzok’s adulterous affair with Lisa Page.

Mr. Gohmert asked Strzok why – when nonexistent “Russian collusion” is being treated with such seriousness by the FBI – did Strzok not think it was worthy to investigate how 30,000 emails from Hillary Clinton’s illegal server were stolen by a foreign entity (possibly Russia)? When Strzok began lying again, Mr. Gohmert – a former judge – said to Strzok:

“You’ve embarrassed yourself. And I can’t help but wonder when I see you looking there with a little smirk, how many times did you look so innocent into your wife’s eyes and lie to her about Lisa Page?”

The hearing erupted with screams of derision from Democrats and possibly even some Republicans. Rep. David Cicilline (D-RI) screeched that it was “intolerable harassment of the witness.” Rep. Bonnie Watson-Coleman (D-NJ) howled that Gohmert needed to take his medication. Was Gohmert wrong?

Strzok had been lying to a congressional hearing for several hours by that point. This intrepid FBI agent who was involved in two of the most high-profile investigations of the 21st century had sent text messages to his mistress in which he described Trump voters as smelly Wal-Mart shoppers, ignorant hillbillies and “retards.” Strzok insisted that this was not evidence of bias, but rather “patriotism.”

Strzok came across as bizarre and creepy throughout the entire hearing: Alternately mincing in his chair and wiggling his shoulders as if he were dancing, sneering and scowling in contempt at Republicans, and leering at the cameras. No sane person would allow Strzok to babysit their children.

Kurt Schlichter, a Christian writer at TownHall, perhaps said it best when he wrote that Strzok, “totally looks like he has a sex dungeon in his basement.”

Yet somehow, Louie Gohmert is supposed to be villain in this story. We have truly fallen a long way in America when mentioning the sin of adultery is now a greater crime than adultery itself. A tremendous irony in this is that the FBI’s motto is “Fidelity, Bravery, Integrity” – a play on the F.B.I. acronym.

This makes Louie Gohmert’s question doubly valid. If Peter Strzok cannot make the choice to be faithful to his own wife, how can Americans expect him to be faithful to the pursuit of justice when it comes to investigating others?

Peter Strzok was also involved in the interview in which FBI investigators later indicted Gen. Mike Flynn for “lying” to investigators. (An egregious practice in which the FBI will ask a witness if a package was delivered by UPS 10 years ago. If you say, “Yes” and it was actually delivered by FedEx – you can be declared a felon.)

Even though Flynn pleaded guilty to “lying,” there is now evidence that Strzok altered the notes from the FBI interview after the fact.

Critics will no doubt be quick to say, “But what about Trump?!”

What about him?

Whatever sins Donald Trump may have committed years ago, he is clearly a reformed man. No other president in modern history has been so universally hated – and therefore endlessly scrutinized – by the media and America’s own intelligence agencies. For all of Trump’s faults in the past, he has clearly put those sins behind him, otherwise the evidence of them would be playing on a continuous 24-hour loop on CNN.

Adultery is a sin that is punishable by the death penalty in Scripture, because it is an act of treason against God’s highest form of government: The family.

Any person put in a position of civil or church service in the Bible is expected to adhere to monogamy with their spouse (judges, deacons, bishops, elders and others).

While his critics are condemning Congressman Gohmert for “going there” in a public hearing, Christians should be praising him for standing up for righteousness and God’s standards for public servants.

As for the Democrats and Republicans who were so quick to condemn Louie Gohmert for mentioning Strzok’s adultery – perhaps they doth protest too much.
